Reindeer are an intermediate feeding type; they have the ability to adapt to short term seasonal changes in food. They avoid eating fibre as much as possible and display highly selective behaviour while foraging. Adaptation to harsh environments with a limited amount of food has made reindeer dependent upon easily digestible food and consequently their digestive systems are less capable of processing plants with high fibre content. Herding is an extensive system which requires a significant amount of land and labour and describes the reindeer industry. Cattle are true grass and roughage eaters; they are well adapted to utilising fibre-rich food and therefore a different production system is used for cattle. Farming is a far more intensive system than herding, constrains more capital investment and is the system we use in Sweden for our cattle. Differences at the digestive systems in these two animals suggest their use of the feeds varies. With a comparison between these two and their energy and nutrient demands you can see that reindeer require more high quality feed while cattle need a higher quantity of food. |

Syftet med denna litteraturstudie var att jämföra den euroasiatiska tundrarenens (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) krav på föda med kraven på föda hos köttproducerande nötkreatur (Bos taurus) inom lantbruket. Renen och nötkreaturet är två olika typer av idisslare. Renen är en intermediär idisslare med god anpassningsförmåga till kortsiktiga säsongsvariationer av betet. Renen undviker att förtära fiber i så stor utsträckning som möjligt och är selektiv när den betar. Anpassningar till miljöer med begränsade mängder föda har gjort renen beroende av lättsmälta födoämnen och dess fodersmältningssystem mindre bra på att tillgodogöra sig växter med hög fiberhalt. Nötkreaturet är en ren gräs- och grovfoderätare som är anpassad till att utnyttja fiberrikt foder. Olika produktionssystem nyttjas för dessa djur. Rennäringens produktionssystem beskrivs av herding, som är ett extensivt system vilket kräver stora landarealer och mycket arbetskraft. Farming är ett mera intensivt produktionssystem och det beskriver sättet att hålla nötkreaturet i Sverige på, farming kräver mera kapital än herding. Skillnader på fodersmältningssystemet mellan dessa båda djurarter tyder på att utnyttjandet av olika typer av föda är olika bra. Vid en jämförelse av energi och näringsbehov kan man se att renen har högre krav på kvalitén av sitt foder. Nötkreaturet har bättre förmåga än renen att kompensera brist på kvalitet med större kvantiteten av föda.
