new materials and working methods which made this possible. The Swedish functional style
is recognised by its light plaster facing and nearly horizontal roofs.
Also the garden design of that time was influenced by the functionalistic ideas. The garden
was now introduced as a pleasure garden for not only the rich but for everyone. The form of
the garden should be designed with the function in mind and not the opposite as it was
before. The garden should be designed with the surrounding landscape in mind, more native
plants were used.
Villa Berg, located in Tyresö south of Stockholm, is a house inspired by the ideas of the
Swedish functionalism. In true functional style a functional plan was produce in cooperation
with the family who lives in the house. The functional plan has been the starting point and
foundation for the design of the garden that now have a fastidious and modern feeling. |

Funktionalismen uppstod på kontinenten efter första världskriget och fick sitt stora genombrott i Sverige i samband med Stockholmsutställningen 1930. Fattigdomen var stor under denna tid vilket ledde till bl.a. trångboddhet vilket funktionalisterna ville förändra. Industrialiseringen som dragit genom Europa förde med sig nya material och arbetssätt som funktionalisterna utnyttjade i sin strävan att erbjuda ett hälsosammare och billigare boende åt människorna i framförallt storstäderna. ”Funkisen” blev ett begrepp och kännetecknades i arkitekturen av ljusputsade fasader, geometriska former och flacka tak. Även trädgårdskonsten påverkades av funktionalisternas ideal, trädgården som rum att vistas i blev till för allmänheten och inte bara för de rika. Nytt var att trädgårdens form skulle styras av vilken funktion trädgården skulle ha och inte som tidigare då formen ofta styrde funktionen. Trädgårdarna anpassades också till landskapet mer än de gjorts tidigare och det blev populärt att använda ett mer inhemskt växtmaterial. Villa Berg i Tyresö söder om Stockholm är ett funkisinspirerat hus byggt 2003-2004. I sann funkisanda har en funktionsplan, framtagen tillsammans med fastighetsägarna familjen Berg, fått ligga till grund för ett gestaltningsförslag till Villa Bergs trädgård. Med funktionsplanen som stomme har Villa Berg fått en trädgård med rena enkla linjer och ett växtmaterial som känns modernt men som ändå har kopplingar till funktionalismen.
