description Characteristics, selection and training of the Grand Prix dressage horse There is a lot of knowledge about the selection and training of the dressage horse towards Grand Prix. However, there is not much documentation about this. The aim of the study was to look into the dressage horse’s characteristics and training of dressage horses towards Grand Prix. The study has two research issues. What kinds of characteristics are wanted in the Grand Prix horse in the selection process? How is the training structured? The author interviewed five experienced dressage-profiles with experience for instance as a Grand Prix rider, trainer or Grand Prix judge. Three of the respondents were Swedish and two were Portuguese. The author had an interview guide with open questions and encouraged the respondents to think and speak freely. Preferred characteristics of the horse depend on the philosophy and ground values of the person doing the selection. However, there is some coherence according the characteristics and training of the Grand Prix horse in the results of this study. The most important characteristic was the mentality of the horse involving forwardness, willingness and attitude to accept the work. The preferred physical characteristics were the gaits where rhythm, pureness, balance and ability of self carriage were the most important. The conformation was important for the soundness, but not crucial in the selection of the horse, even though a good silhouette and an appealing type were preferred. The training should be playful, horsefriendly and should work as a long-term education of the horse. The training is all about refining and improving the horse and its abilities. The conclusion was that the optimal Grand Prix horse has no weaknesses, and has excellent characteristics regarding mentality, willingness and natural abilities and is given a well-structured training.
