The agricultural sector is the most important contributor to the economy and also the most important source of employment. In 1977 it contributed 27% to the GDP (See Table in the Annex). The development of the sectors is undergoing some very important changes with much emphasis being placed on its role as a major contributor to the overall economic and social development of the country. The major economic and social objectives of the government are based on the attainment of self-sufficiency and to adequately "feed, house and clothe the Guyanese population".
