La ratificación por Cuba del Tratado Internacional sobre los Recursos Fitogenéticos para la Alimentación y la Agricultura en el año 2004 fue un paso importante hacia la salvaguarda de la seguridad alimentaria en el país, ya que dicha ratificación posibilita a las instituciones de investigación y a los bancos de germoplasma de Cuba el acceso facilitado a los recursos que forman parte del sistema multilateral de acceso a recursos fitogenéticos y reparto equitativo de los beneficios derivado de su utilización. Despite being rich in biological diversity, Cuba depends on genetic resources for food and agricul ture from other countries to facilitate its plant breed ing programmes. The ratification of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture by Cuba in 2004 was an important step towards safeguarding food security for the country, enabling national agricultural research institutions and germplasm banks to have facilitated access to those genetic resources which are part of the multilateral system of access and benefit-sharing of the Treaty.
