El Tratado Internacional sobre los Recursos Fitogenéticos para la Alimentación y la Agricultura crea una reserva común de recursos genéticos, dentro de la cual los miembros del Tratado gozan de acceso facilitado a dichos recursos para actividades de investigación, mejoramiento genético, conservación y capacitación, y se comprometen a aportar parte de los beneficios monetarios que resulten del uso de tales recursos a un fondo común manejado por el Órgano Rector del Tratado. Este sistema multilateral de acceso y reparto equitativo de beneficios es uno de los resultados más importantes del diálogo internacional sobre recursos genéticos, y constituye un paso importante hacia la seguridad alimentaria global. Este artículo explica los principios del sistema multilateral y ofrece una descripción de su funcionamiento. The Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture creates an international genetic resource commons within which parties provide facilitated access to plant genetic resources for research, breeding, conservation and training, and commit to contribute part of the monetary benefits arising from the use of such resources to a com mon fund managed by the Governing Body of the Treaty. This so called multilateral system of access and benefit-sharing represents one of the most remarkable results of the international dialogue on genetic resources, and constitutes an important step towards global food security.
