Se presentan los resultados de un estudio de costos y beneficios de los sistemas agroforestales (SAF) promovidos por 21 proyectos en América Central y el Caribe. Se encontró que en la mayoría de los casos los SAF son rentables (a una tasa de descuento real del 20%), tienen una rentabilidad mayor que otras alternativas agrícolas y han generado beneficios ambientales y sociales para las comunidades rurales y para la sociedad. La estrategia de extensión que dió lugar a la adopción se basa en asistencia técnica combinada con la provisión de los insumos mínimos requeridos para que el productor empiece a trabajar en pequeña escala, e incremente paulatinamente el área en árboles según aumenta su experiencia con los SAF y los beneficios que generan. Se destaca la necesidad de poner más atención a la evaluación de beneficios de los SAF y las condiciones bajo las cuales los SAF son beneficiosos y serán adoptados. This article presents the results of a study of the costs and benefits of agroforestry systems (AFS) promoted by 21 projects in Central America and Caribbean. The study found that, in the majority of the cases, the AFS were profitable (at a real discount rate of 20%) and that they were more profitable than other agricultural alternatives. They have generated social and environmental benefits for rural communities and for society. The extension strategy which has generated adoption has been based on providing technical assistance and limited inputs to farm families which allow them to try out AFS on a small scale and increase their planting as they gain experience in implementing the systems and receive benefits from them.
