Se analizaron las tipologías de 40 fincas cafetaleras con sombra de especies maderables en el cantón de Pérez Zeledón, Costa Rica y se recopiló el conocimiento agronómico y el manejo gerencial de los caficultores. Se identificaron tres tipos de cafetales con sombra de maderables. Los maderables se plantaron generalmente a altas densidades, inapropiadas para cafetales y, quizás por esta razón, los caficultores de Pérez Zeledón prefirieron árboles leguminosos tradicionales ("de servicio") para sombra de sus cafetales, sin importar el tamaño del cafetal y tendencias de precios del café. Los productores tuvieron amplio conocimiento del manejo agronómico de los cafetales, pero no supieron cómo plantar y manejar los árboles para optimizar la producción de madera sin afectar los rendimientos del café. The typologies of 40 coffee farms with timber shade trees in the canton of Pérez Zeledón, Costa Rica were analyzed and the agronomic as well as business management knowledge of the farmers was compiled. Three types of coffee plantation with timber shade trees were identified. In general, the timber trees were planted at high densities unsuitable for coffee possibly because of this, Pérez Zeledón coffee farmers preferred traditional leguminous "service" shade trees for their coffee plantations, irrespective of the area of the plantation or coffee price trends.
