El Sistema Modular constituye una herramienta de planificación que permite a un productor forestal cumplir con los estándares de manejo forestal sostenible, en preparación para una evaluación con miras a lograr la certificación forestal. El Sistema fue desarrollado tomando como base las similitudes de los Principios & Criterios del Forest Stewardship Council y los aspectos que generan el mayor número de pre-condiciones y condiciones en los procesos de certificación independiente en Centroamérica. El Sistema Modular fue organizado en cinco módulos principales y un número variable de sub-módulos, cuya estructura permite identificar los vacíos en el cumplimiento de los estándares de manejo y, por consiguiente, establecer un plan de acción para su cumplimiento. Las ventajas principales del Sistema Modular se traducen en la reducción de costos asociados al cumplimiento de condiciones, las cuales se identifican y resuelven con antelación al proceso de certificación; al mismo tiempo permite a los productores vincularse con las Redes de Comercialización de Productos Forestales Certificados. La utilidad del Sistema está determinada por la facilidad de revisar el cumplimiento de los estándares de manejo, mediante una lista de chequeo. The Modular System is a planning tool that allows the forest producer to comply with standards for sustainable forest management in preparation for a certification assessment. The Modular System was developed using as a basis the Principles & Criteria of the Forest Stewardship Council and those aspects which generate the largest number of corrective action requests for certified operations in Central America. The Modular System is organized into five principal modules and a variable number of sub-modules in a manner which allows the identification of shortfalls in the compliance with management standards and, consequently, the establishment of an action plan to ensure compliance. The principal advantages of the Modular System are: reduction of costs associated with resolving shortfalls in management performance, which are identified and closed out before the formal certification process begins; and the opportunity to link with the Global Forest and Trade Network of certified forest products as producers which are in transition to becoming certified.
