Las características ecológicas y socioeconómicas de América Central indican que existen buenas posibilidades para promover los sistemas agroforestales. A partir de los años 70, instituciones de la Región iniciaron un proceso de identificación y análisis de los sistemas agroforestales existentes y, posteriormente, diseñaron y promovieron sistemas mejorados. El artículo identifica factores que impiden o favorecen la promoción de estos sistemas y analiza el impacto de su adopción. Se recalca que económicamente los sistemas agroforestales son rentables para los pequeños productores de escasos recursos. No obstante, aún hace falta buscar modelos prácticos y sencillos para promocionar la agroforestería dentro de esquemas participativos y, por otro lado, poner más énfasis en la comercialización. The ecological and socioeconomic features of Central America tend to indicate that there are good possibilities to promote agroforestry systems. Starting in the 70s, institutions of the Region started a process of identification and analysis of existing agroforestry systems, and subsequently they designed and promoted improved systems. The article identifies factors that impede or favor the promotion of these systems and analyzes the impact of their adoption. It is emphasized that economically the agroforestry systems are profitable for small producers with scarce resources.
