En algunos cafetales de Mesoamérica es frecuente encontrar árboles maderables valiosos como caobas (Swietenia spp.) y cedors (Cedrela spp.), los cuales son severamente atacados por el barrenador Hypsipyla grandella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). Una opción para su control biológico seían algunas especies de hormigas depredadoras comunes en los arbustos de café. Por tanto, en Turrialba, Costa Rica, se inventariaron las especies presentes en dichos arbustos y en árboles de cedro dulce (Cedrela odorata). In some Mesoamerican coffee plantations valuable timber trees, such a mahogany (Swietenia spp.) and cedar (Cedrela spp.) are often severely attacked by the shotborer Hypsipyla grandella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). One possibility for the biological control of this pest could be certain predatory ant species that are common on coffee bushes.
