El Proyecto CATIE INTA-MIP (NORAD) validó técnica y metodológicamente la implementación del manejo integrado de plagas (MIP) en el cultivo de café, durante el ciclo agrícola de 1997-1998. El objetivo del Proyecto fue promover el conocimiento ecológico y un enfoque renovado de género y reforzar las habilidades de extensionistas que trabajan con grupos mixtos de productores/as. El trabajo se realizó con un grupo de productores de la comunidad de Monterrey, Jinotega, en el marco de un proceso estructurado de capacitación, basado en momentos fenológicos del cultivo. Mujeres y hombres participaron activamente realizando prácticas de observación, diagnóstico y recuento de plagas, análisis y evaluación de datos. Esto les dejó conocimientos ecológicos útiles para el manejo de sus cultivos. El proceso se dio con la facilitación de técnicos de ODESAR y el acompañamiento de especialistas del CATIE. In 1997-98, the CATIE/INTA IPM Project in Nicaragua validated technical and methodological aspects of the implementation of ecologically based integrated pest management (IPM). The Project's objective was to promote both ecological knowledge and a new gender outlook, as well as to strengthen the abilities of extensionists working with mixed groups of farmers. The Project was carried out in the community of Monterrey, in Jinotega, through structured IPM training processes. The farmers were trained in observation, diagnosis, pest appraisal, and data evaluation. These skills will provide useful ecological knowledge for analysis and farm management.
