Se presenta una propuesta en la cual se reconsidera la agroforestería, basada en la experiencia de campo de los autores y los resultados de un estudio mundial sobre la influencia de la creación y el manejo de los parques nacionales en las comunidades rurales. Se sugiere el uso del término "agroforestería social", para designar el enfoque que debería tener la agroforestería en comunidades rurales alrededor de las áreas protegidas (zonas de amortiguamiento). Se concluye que la agroforestería social no es la panacea para todos los conflictos entre las áreas protegidas y las comunidades locales no obstante, es una oportunidad de encuentro para un mejor convencimiento e involucramiento de los participantes. Se incluye una serie de ejemplos sobre la complementariedad que se puede encontrar entre las necesidades de las comunidades y el uso adecuado de recursos locales. A proposal is presented in which the role of agroforestry is reconsidered, based on the authors field experience and the results of a worldwide study on the influence of the formation and management of national parks on rural communities. The use of the term "social agroforestry" is suggested to designate the focus that agroforestry should have in communities around protected areas (buffer zones). It is concluded that social agroforestry is not a panacea for all the conflicts between protected area and local communities nevertheless, it is an opportunity to find better acceptance and involvement from all the participants.
