Se estableció un experimento en la estación experimental del CATIE en Turrialba, Costa Rica, para evaluar la posibilidad de restringir la extensión lateral del sistema radicular del árbol maderable Eucalyptus deglupta (eucalipto 12-16 meses de edad) mediante barreras vivas, sembradas en hileras de árboles, de las grámineas competitivas: Panicum maximum (pasto guinea), Brachiaria brizantha (brachiaria) y Saccharum sp. (caña de azúcar). El crecimiento del eucalipto fue significativamente limitado en su asociación con el pasto guinea y en menor grado, en la asociación con las barreras de dos y tres hileras de brachiaria. La restricción de las raíces arbóreas por las barreras pareció ser más eficiente en parcelas donde hubo una capa superficial del suelo compactada, y aparentemente disminuyó al aumentar la edad de los árboles. There was some evidence of an increase of the root barrier effect of the grass strips in areas with a compacted topsoil but of a decrease with increasing age of the trees. An experiment was established at CATIE's experimental station in Turrialba, Costa Rica in order evaluate whether lateral root extensión of the timber tree Eucalyptus deglupta could be restricted by the competitive grasses guinea (Panicum maximimun), brachiaria (Brachiaria brizantha) and sugarcane (Saccharum sp.), planted either in single, double or triple rows on both sides of rows of the Eucalyptus trees.
