A inicios de 1997 los productores de sandía en Tipitapa, Managua, Nicaragua, reportaron una enfermedad desconocida, que causaba problemas en el fruto. El problema fue introducido a Nicaragua en recipientes preparados por la Co. Petoseed. El Departamento de Protección de Plantas del Ministerio de Agricultura decomisó la semilla infestada. El organismo causal fue identificado y caracterizado. Las pruebas de patogenicidad demostraron que se trata de la bacteria Acidovorax avenae ssp. Citrulli. Este es el primer reporte que se hace de la bacteria y ha sido registrada en el listado de plagas establecidas en Nicaragua. In early 1997, watermelon growers in Tipitapa, Managua, Nicaragua, reported an unidentifiable disease attacking the fruits. The problem was traced to seeds introduce by Horsh from the Petosee Company, in Costa Rica. The Ministry of Agriculture's Crop Protection Department recalled the contaminated seed. Through a series of lab tests, the disease was characterized as caused by the bacterial fruit spot in watermelon, identified as Acidovorax avenae subsp. Citrulli.
