Aunque las zonas de amortiguamiento son de importancia capital para probar en ellas las teorías de desarrollo con conservación, en la realidad son muy pocos los ejemplos conocidos con manejo relatimente exitoso. La orientación proteccionista de los conceptos ha influido para que no se reconozca la importancia de las interrelaciones entre las poblaciones humanas locales y los recursos naturales, como criterio fundamental para diseñar, establecer y manejar las zonas de amortiguamiento. La intensidad y naturaleza de las interrelaciones o flujos, referentes a la potencialidad y capacidad de los recursos existentes, deben ser la base para determinar la ubicación, tamaño y forma de las zonas de amortiguamiento y orientar su manejo. Although buffer zones are of fundamental importance for the testing within them of development-with-conservation theories, in reality, management has been relatively successful in few known cases.
