Se evaluó el potencial de producción de madera en 35 fincas representativas de sistemas silvopastoriles en el distrito de El Cayo, Belice y se analizó el marco legal y político que rige al sector forestal en el país. Mediante un inventario de brinzales, latizales y fustales, se determinó una población de 6156 individuos (1891 árboles adultos y 4265 brinzales y latizales) de 67 especies pertenecientes a 52 géneros y 17 familias. Cedrela odorata, Piscidia piscipula, Tectona grandis, Metopium brownei, Swietenia macrophylla y Tabebuia rosea representaron el 59% del volumen maderable comercial total (8,35 m3/ha) a C. odorata le correspondió el 66,5% de dicho volumen. Un análisis de sensibilidad del precio de la madera aserrada puesta en la finca o en puestos de venta demostró que las fincas pequeñas y medianas obtendrían mayores ingresos netos (hasta un 52 y 45%, respectivamente) que los obtenidos actualmente con la producción ganadera. Sin embargo, se requiere mejorar el manejo de la regeneración natural arbórea para garantizar el reclutamiento desde plántulas y brinzales hacia clases diamétricas superiores y, de esa forma, alcanzar el manejo forestal sostenible. The potential for timber production was evaluated on 35 farms representative of the silvopastoral systems of El Cayo District, Belize. Also, the legal and political framework govern ing the forest sector was analyzed. Through an inventory of saplings, taper and trees, a total population of 6156 individuals (1891 adult trees and 4265 saplings and taper) from 67 tree spe cies, 52 genera and 17 families were found. Cedrela odorata, Piscidia piscipula, Tectona grandis, Metopium brownei, Swietenia macrophylla and Tabebuia rosea constituted 59% of the total trade volume (average 8.35 m3/ha); C. odorata account ed for 66.5% of that volume. A sensitivity analy sis of sawn wood prices, both on farm and at enterprise, showed that small and medium-sized farms would receive higher net returns (52 and 45%, respectively) than the currently obtained with livestock production.
