La agroforestería es el sistema de uso de la tierra que combina árboles con cultivos y/o animales domésticos, en forma secuencial o simultánea. Esta se caracteriza por ser un sistema sustentable e interactivo y una opción económica, accesible al campesino de la región centroamericana. Aún siendo una disciplina joven, la agroforestería representa la suma de prácticas que los campesinos han manejado, de generación en generación, en sus sistemas de producción. Se presentan resumidamente prácticas como huertos caseros tropicales mixtos, el cultivo en franjas, el manejo del rastrojo, las cercas vivas y el sistema Taungya. Se enfatiza la necesidad de recuperar el conocimiento empírico acumulado a través de siglos de experiencia. Agroforestry is a land use system that combines tres with crops and/or domestic animals in a sequential or concurrent form. It is characterized as being a sustainable and interactive system accesible to the farmers in the Central American región. Although agroforestry is Young as a scientific discipline, it represents the sum of practices that farmers have been using for generations in their production systems. The principal characteristics of tropical mixed home gardens, alley cropping, anagement of second growth, live fences, and the taungya system, among others are summed up.
