Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo observar la ocurrencia de D. luteipes y su posible influencia en la población de S. frugiperda en condiciones de campo. El trabajo fue realizado en Jaboticabal, Sao Paulo, en la zafra 2001/2002, en un área de 0,5 ha plantada con maíz (AG-2012). Las evaluaciones fueron realizadas semanalmente, en 30 plantas al azar, registrando el número de S. frugiperda y de D. luteipes, hasta los 80 días pos-germinación de las plantas. D. luteipes estuvo presente en todas las evaluaciones, casi siempre asociada a la larva S. frugiperda. Durante la fase fenológica 1, hubo aumento de la infestación de gusanos, de 1,00 a 1,40 gusanos/planta, mientras que el número medio de depredadores fue de 0,27 a 0,60 individuos/planta. Después de este período, la densidad poblacional de S. frugiperda se redujo considerablemente, hasta alcanzar 0,10 gusanos/planta, pero el número de depredadores aumentó significativamente, llegando a 1,27 individuos/planta. El mayor número medio de D. luteipes fue observado 44 días después de la emergencia de la planta, con un total de 3,43 individuos/planta. D. luteipes tiene un importante papel en la reducción poblacional de huevos y gusanos de S. frugiperda. Doru luteipes is an important predator of eggs and small caterpillars of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, a serious pest occurring during the whole period of development of maize crops (Zea mays). This paper deals with the occurrence and the influence of D. luteipes on the population of S. frugiperda in field conditions. The experiment was set in a 0.5 ha area of maize crop (AG-2012), in Jaboticabal, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Evaluations were carried out weekly in 30 corn plants, at random, by registering the number of S. frugiperda and D. luteipes up to 80 days from plant germination. D. luteipes was present in all the evaluations, mostly associated to the S. frugiperda caterpillar. During the first phenological stage, there was an increase in the number of caterpillars, from 1.00 to 1.40 caterpillars/plant, while the mean number of the predator ranged from 0.27 to 0.60 predator/plant. After this period, the population density of S. frugiperda was reduced to 0.10 caterpillars/plant, but that of D. luteipes increased to 1.27 predator/plant. The highest mean number of D. luteipes, at 3.43 predator/plant, was observed 44 days after plant emergence.
