Sc) -- CATIE, Turrialba (Costa Rica), 1997 El estudio sistematiza la experiencia agroforestal de la caficultura en el distrito de Rivas de Pérez Zeledón en sus componentes técnico y financiero, con el propósito de identificar, ubicar y comprender formas de utilización productiva y sostenibles de las tierras de ladera en el trópico húmedo. El reconocimiento de Sistemas Agroforestales sombra-café (SAF's) se basa en el Análisis de Componentes Principales. Una vez acotados los SAF's se realiza un análisis de rentabilidad y riesgo, poniendo especial atención en las características de las variables que afectan a los beneficios netos del caficultor, esto es, el precio y el rendimiento. Se tipificaron tres Sistemas Agroforestales, que de acuerdo al predominio de algunos componentes se les ha llamado: SAF I 'café-poró-musaseas', SAF II 'café-poró' y SAF III 'café-sombra diversificada'. El poró es Erythrina poeppigiana y la musasea predominante es plátano (Musa AAB). El SAF I es el más rentable y el de menor riesgo, mientras el SAF II tiene los peores resultados para ambos conceptos. Finalmente, la combinación 'café-sombra diversificada', o sea el SAF III, ocupa el sitio intermedio. El análisis de presupuesto parcial fue insuficiente para determinar la situación financiera debido a que no considera el desempeño de las variables de interés, y en particular, los factores que afectan el rendimiento. En el análisis de riesgo se hicieron una serie de correcciones, y ajustes, aplicando transformaciones de las variables de estas variables, siendo de particular utilidad la Transformación Seno Hiperboíca Inversa (IHSI) (Ramírez 1997). También se hicieron ajustes de rendimiento mediante regresión no normal.
