Sc.) -- CATIE, 2002 6 ilustraciones. 17 tablas. 37 referencias de las páginas 69-73 Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo general determinar la contribución de la reforestación impulsada por el sistema de incentivo forestal al restablecimiento del área boscosa, beneficios biofísicos y socioeconómicos. La caracterización de la situación forestal de la República de Panamá se valió de varios instrumentos y métodos de estimación por medio de ecuaciones econométricas. El coeficiente de elasticidad de la reducción de la cobertura boscosa fue de - 0.691, lo cual indica que la velocidad de reducción a partir de 5,245,000 hectáreas de área forestal que existían en los inicios de los 40 fue muy rápida, pero el descenso fue más moderado para las décadas más recientes. Con la promulgación de la Ley de Incentivos en 1992, se inicia un nuevo período en el restablecimiento de plantaciones forestales, hecho que despertó el interés y la atención del sector privado a incursionar en esta actividad. This research had as a general objective to determine the contribution of the forest incentive system to reforestation, reestablishment of forest area, as well as biophysics and socioeconomic benefits. The characterization of the forest situation in Panama was determined by several instruments and estimation methods from econometric equations. The coefficient of elasticity for forest coverage reduction was -0.691, which shows that the reduction rate of the 5,246,000 hectareas of forest area in early 40's was very high, but in recent decades the reduction was moderated.
