El cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) fue domesticado en Centroamérica y México, en donde desde tiempos remotos ha sido un cultivo tradicional y estrechamente ligado a ciertos grupos humanos. Los agroecosistemas con cacao poseen características ventajosas desde el punto de vista agrícola y ambiental, sin embargo, es necesario hacerlos más competitivos, estables y atractivos para los agricultores. Con este fin el CATIE está desarrollando investigaciones en tres campos específicos, sistemas agroforestales, mejoramiento genético y manejo de enfermedades.
