description Three new varieties of potatoes resistant to Phytophthora infestans, Tizoc, Rosset, and Guceta are presented. They were selected by the Interamerican Institute of Agricultural Sciences from material developed by Cornell University in a cooperative program started in 1946. Solanum demissum was used as the source of resistance. The studies and trials were conducted in the Meseta Central of Costa Rica, mainly on soils of recent volcanic origin, at altitudes ranging from 1,400 to 2,800 meters and mean temperatures from 13° to 20°. The origin of each variety and its characteristics are given. The variety Harford, named in 1947, is also presented, for special reasons. The new varieties have out-yielded the local ones and commercial seed production has been started by the Ministry of Agriculture of Costa Rica and by private growers.
