| description | A study of inheritance in wheat crosses DGV 11 x Rhodesian C 12273 and DGV 11 x Kenya 58 is presented. DGV 11 is a high-yielding variety, susceptible to black stem rust, with yellowish-white, aristate spikes, short sacs, and moderate spike density. Both Rhodesian C 12273 and Kenya 58 give lower yields, are highly resistant to stem rust, have light brown, aristulate spikes, with long sacs, and lower spike density. The characters studied were field resistance to rust and awn type. The F in both crosses segregated in a ratio of 9 resistant, 3 temiresistant, and 4 susceptible. These results can be explained in terms of two pairs of genes of recessive epistatic action present in Rhodesian C 12273 and Kenya 58. The F population of both crosses segregated in the ratio of 3 aristulate plants to 1 vistiulate plant. This could be explained by assuming the aristulated character in Rhodesian C 12273 and Kenya 38 is controlled by a single set of genes.
According to the chi-square test for independence, in the cross DGV 11 A Rhodesian C 12273 there was a tendency for field reaction to stem substance and awn type to show some association, probably of a genetic nature. A similar tendency was observed in the cross DGV 11 x Kenya 58. From these data, a genetic similarity of both wheat varieties, Rhodesian C 12273 and Kenya 58, can be inferred. No segregation was observed in crosses between these two varieties. |
