Sumario:The behaviour of five timber species was studied when planted by stumps, in two seasons and both under forest and grass canopies. Results showed that initial survival was higher under forest for mahogany (Swietenia humilis), laurel (Cordia alliodora) and walnut (Jugland boliviana). Spanish cedar (Cedrela mexicana) survived much better in the grass area. Mexican cypress (Cupressus lusitanica) failed in both covers and obviously season favored the establishment and growth of mahogany. For laurel there was little diference for the two planting seasons. Mahogany showed a better survival when the stump diameter increased
