Description
Summary:Several experiments were carried out to determine the necessary supplements for a simplified ration for growing chicks. All the ingredients of the rations were available in Central America. The results indicate that the incorporation of 5% of ramie meal (Bochmeria nivea) gave as good growth as a cod liver oil supplement, that 4% of blood meal satisfies the requirement for animal protein and that the mineral mixture used is adequate to promote maximum growth with the rations used. The addition of methionine or of the vitamins of the B complex did not improve the nutritive value of the rations used. The substitution of part of the corn in the ration for ground corn cobs gave lower weight gains; on the other hand, molasses alone or combined with 10 or 20% of ground corn cobs gave maximum growth.
