description Wilt disease is the main limiting factor of the red pepper (Capsicum) crop in Peru The author determined the causal agent to be Phytophthora citrophthora and not Fusarium annuum, as was thought before. A search for somces of resistance was begun in 1958, gathering a number of varieties, both native and from other parts of the world This stock was subjected to wilt resistance tests, either in artificial or natural conditions. Tests were made at La Molina in 1958-59, and at Cañete in 1959-60. In both places plants growing in pots were inoculated with pure cultures of the fungus, and where enough seeds were available, they were grown on infected fields Most varieties were susceptible to wilt disease. Of 129 varieties studied, five me reported as promising, being apparently inmune to P. citrophthora They are three varieties of Capsicum annuum, 631A. Marinalco, from México; P1.201.232 and P1201 234, from the United States. The rentainder two are Peruvian varieties: 'Rocolo' (C pubescens) and 'Mishme Bravo Amarillo', (C. pendulum), No variety of C. sinense tested was Jound to be resistant to wilt. A. Gorbitz.
