The calves were weaned at 28 days and consumed a total of 84 litres of milk. The following measurements were taken weekly from birth to 12 weeks of age: weight, height, thoracic perimeters, length, cannon-bone circunference and concentrate and hay consumption. No significant differences could be demonstrated among any of these criteria. Calves on all treatments maintained a satisfactory rate of gain. It was concluded that the use of CSM as the principal source of protein is practicable for early weaned calves. An economic study using local prices effective during the period of the experiment indicated costs would be reduced using higher proportions of CSM. The results were discussed with reference to othedies in this field.
