Summary:Soil samples taken from the rhizosphere of different vegetable crops in ten representative Chinese gardens were quantitatively analyzed for nematodes. The analysis revealed the existence of mixed populations of three main nematode genera Rotylenchulus (R. reniformis), Meloidogyne sp and Helicotylenchus (H. dihystera and H. microcephalus). .It was found that their distribution and populations varied according to cropping and soil type, the pattern being very similar in every farm studied. The total number of plant parasitic nematodes per 50 ml of soil from individual crops range from 30 to 2740. Snap beans harbored the highest populations of R. reniformis, followed in a descending order, by Ceylan spinach, bunching onions and eggplant. Hot pepper was found in all cases to be a very poor host of the above mentioned nematode; it was, however, the best host for Meloidogynen sp. On the other hand, populations of Meloidogynen sp. were extremely low in buncing onions. However, in no case were they as high as R. reniformis populations. This nematode was found more abundant in heavy soils.
