Summary:An experiment with forage sorgum (Sorgum vulgare Pers.) was established on the experimental fields of the Escuela Nacional de Agricultura y Ganadería de Nicaragua during the months of August to December 0f 1969, on soils derived form alluvial volcanic ash at 56 meters above sea level. Applications of nitrogen were made at levels of 0.97, 194, 291, and 388 kilograms per hectare divided in three equal applications. The nitrogen source was ammonium sulfate and the variety of forage sorghum was ´Sudax 16´. Throughout the three cuttings that were made, the best response was obtained as the 291 kilogram level, where the yield of ddry matter and the average percentage of protein in the forage increased significantly. For each cutting, a production function was adjusted in order to estimate the level wich produces the highest verenne. The optimum levels found were 47, 28, and 46 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare, for the first, second, and third cuttings, respectively.
