Summary:A study was made on the effects of soil applied nitrate nitrogen (NO3 -N) on the "base level" activity of nitrate redutase (NR) and accumulation of soluble nitrogen in Brachiaria sp "Base level" activity is defined here as the NR-activity due to fluctuations in photosynthetic activity are eliminated. This level of activity should reflect the ecological conditions prevalent during the period previous to harvesting, plus the effects due to the plant´s history.
