La historia de la silvicultura en los bosques tropi cales húmedos muestra una tendencia general hacia la adopción de sistemas policíclicos de corta selectiva. En tales sistemas, las operaciones de aprovechamiento son, sin duda, el primer y más importante tratamiento silvicultural que pueda ser aplicado. Por esta razón, se ha dado espe cial atención a cómo mejorar las operaciones de aprovechamiento en bosques tropicales. A inicios de la década de 1990 las técnicas de aprove chamiento de impacto reducido (AIR), basadas en experiencias anteriores en el norte de Queensland, fueron implementadas en las tres grandes regiones con bosques tropicales. La idea principal detrás de estas técnicas fue que, al reducir el daño en el bosque, éste se regeneraría mejor. El AIR fue rápida y ampliamente reconocido como un com ponente esencial de las operaciones de aprove chamiento sostenible de madera. Sin embargo, las operaciones de AIR –así como los otros sistemas de aprovechamiento selectivo practicados en los trópicos– aun están basadas en una regla muy simple: el límite diamétrico mínimo fijado a las especies comerciales. El presente trabajo se dirige a identificar las limitaciones que enfrentan estas técnicas y proponer recomendaciones para supe rarlas. Estas incluyen una mayor consideración a las características ecológicas de las especies aprovechadas, así como a la valorización de los recursos forestales, tanto de productos madera bles como no maderables. La silvicultura tropical debería mantener y favorecer la alta diversidad de los bosques tropicales de producción debido a su importante valor biológico y potencial económico para el futuro. The history of silviculture in tropical rainforests shows a general trend towards the adoption of polycyclic selective felling systems. In these systems, harvesting operations are undoubt edly the first and most important silvicultural treat ment that might be ever applied. For this reason, special attention has been given on how to improve harvesting operations in tropical forests. In the early 90’s, Reduced Impact logging techniques (RIL), based on past experiences in North Queensland, were therefore implemented in the three major tropical forests. The main idea behind these tech niques was that by reducing damage on stands, the forest will regenerate better. RIL was rapidly and widely recognised as an essential component of sustainable timber harvesting operations. However, RIL operations are still based, as all other selective logging systems operated in the tropics, on a very simple rule: the minimum diameter limit applied to all commercial species. This paper aims to identify the limitations these techniques are facing and to propose recommendations to overcome them. These include a higher consideration of ecological features of the species harvested as well as the valorisation of forestry ressources including both timber and non timber forest products.
