All cows were under grazing conditions, and had a mineral mix ad-libitum. The predominant grasses were molasses grass 30%, jaragua grass 20% and native legumineus and gramineous 50%. The calves were weighted at 210; 270; 365 and 540 days of age and these weights were adjusted for age of the calf; additionally a group of 46 heifer calves were left as replacement females, and their age at first calving was determined. These variables were analyzed by least squares procedures with the apropiate linear model for each variable that included the effect of sex and breed of the offspring, and some first order interactions. At 270 days the calves weaned at 9 months of age weighted 37.3 kg more than those weaned at 7 months of age; at 365 and 540 days the difference in weight was 25.3 and 17.9 kg, respectively, in favour of the calves weaned at 9 months. In percentages this difference was 18.1% at 270 days, 11.4% at 365 and 7.0% at 540 days of age. The age at first calving of the replacement heifers dit not differ significantly between the weaning ages: the overall mean was 1.452 days. The age of the dam did not significantly affected the age of first calving of the heifers. Under grazzing conditions the decreasing differences in weight of the calves weaned at 7 and 9 months of age did not influenced the age at firts calving of heifers weaned at 7 months of age. This fact could mean that the differences were minimized under the conditions of the "Piedemonte Llanero located in the eastern region of Colombia.

En el Centro Regional de Investigación La Libertad del Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (ICA) en Villavicencio, las crías de 183 vacas de las razas San Martinero, Cebú y Angus-San Martinero se asignaron en el momento del parto a 2 edades de destete: 7 y 9 meses. Todas ellas estuvieron bajo condiciones de pastoreo y se les suministró a voluntad una mezcla mineral. Los pastos predominantes fueron: gordura 30 por ciento, puntero 20 por ciento, leguminosas y gramineas nativas 50 por ciento. Los terneros se pesaron y ajustaron por edad a los 210, 270, 365 y 540 días; adicionalmente 46 terneras se dejaron como remplazos y se determinó su edad al primer parto. Estas variables fueron analizadas por el método de cuadrados mínimos con modelos apropiados para cada variable que incluían los efectos del sexo de la cría, edad de la vaca y algunas interacciones de primer orden. A los 270 días los terneros destetados a los 9 meses pesaron 37.3 kg más que los destetados a los 7 meses; a los 365 y 540 días la diferencia en peso fue de 25.3 y 17.9 kg, respectivamente, a favor de los terneros destetados a los 9 meses de edad; porcentualmente esta diferencia fue de 18.1 por ciento a los 270 días, 11.4 por ciento a los 365 días y 7.0 por ciento a los 540 días. La edad de las novillas al primer parto no difirió significativamente entre las edades de destete, el promedio general fue de 1452 días; la edad de la madre no afectó significativamente la edad de la novilla al primer parto.
