Behavior of Diaphorina citri: an investigation of the potential risk to the most commonly used citrus rootstock in Europe

The Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae) is a vector of the bacterium that causes huanglongbing (HLB), a disease heavily impacting citrus production in many areas worldwide. Neither the psyllid nor the disease have been found in the Mediterranean yet, where citrange...

description The Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae) is a vector of the bacterium that causes huanglongbing (HLB), a disease heavily impacting citrus production in many areas worldwide. Neither the psyllid nor the disease have been found in the Mediterranean yet, where citrange Carrizo (Citrus sinensis Osb. x Poncirus trifoliata L. Raf.) is extensively used as citrus rootstock. This study evaluated the suitability of this rootstock as a host for D. citri in both laboratory and greenhouse conditions. The suitability of sour orange (Citrus aurantium L.) (highly susceptible) and trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata L. Raf.) (highly resistant) was also assessed. Host suitability was determined based on host plant selection, oviposition, and survival of D. citri. Under laboratory conditions the psyllid preferentially chose and oviposited on citrange Carrizo and sour orange rather than on P. trifoliata. Greenhouse experiments demonstrated that oviposition on P. trifoliata was nil and provided evidence that citrange Carrizo is an extremely favorable host for D. citri development and reproduction. This information is important for the Mediterranean region, where HLB could prove devastating for the citrus industry because of the widespread use of citrange Carrizo as rootstock.
