Comparative Transmission Efficiency of Two Broad Bean Wilt Virus 1 Isolates by Myzus Persicae and Aphis Gossypii

We tested the transmission efficiency of two genetically divergent isolates of Broad bean wilt virus 1w (BBWV-1), PV-132 from the USA, and Ben from Spain, by two aphid species, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and Apbis gossypii (Glover) collected in Spain. Efficiency was estimated as the number of infected...

description We tested the transmission efficiency of two genetically divergent isolates of Broad bean wilt virus 1w (BBWV-1), PV-132 from the USA, and Ben from Spain, by two aphid species, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and Apbis gossypii (Glover) collected in Spain. Efficiency was estimated as the number of infected plants divided by the number of single-aphid-inoculated plants. The two aphid species transmitted the virus isolates with equivalent efficiency, but the transmission rate was significantly higher for isolate Ben than for PV-132. It is hypothesized that the specificity determinants for vector-virus interaction might be similar for M. persicae and A. gossypii, whereas transmission rate could be affected by amino acid differences in the coat proteins of the two isolates.
