Los órganos y tejidos que denotaron alteraciones más evidentes fueron piel, ganglios linfáticos, bazo, riñón, miocardio e hígado. Una reacción de hipersensibilidad tipo IV inducida por componentes de esta especie forrajera, parece ser el origen de estos trastornos. La toxicidad de este género ha sido descripta en varios países del mundo. Sin embargo, en Argentina la enfermedad solo fue informada en la región central del país y este sería el primer caso descrito en el noroeste. |

The aim of this paper is to describe an outbreak of hairy vetch (Vicia villosa ) poisoning in a dairy cattle herd from Northwest Argentine. The incidence was 5.4% (4/73) and the lethality was 100%. Hairy vetch poisoning is characterized by a systemic granulomatous inflammatory response. Clinically sick animals manifested decay, pyrexia, dermatitis, alopecia, progressive weight loss and death. The organs and tissues that showed the most evident modifications were skin, lymph nodes, spleen, kidney, myocardium and liver. It seems that some components of this forage species induced a type IV hypersensitivity reaction. The toxicity of this genus has been described in several countries of the world.
