The trial was carried out at INTA EEA Chilecito. A factorial design of randomized treatments with four replications was used. Full irrigation (RC-100 % of ETc) was applied during the crop cycle and two levels with controlled deficit irrigation (RDC-75 % of ETc and RDC-50 % of ETc) from the 7th-10th visible leaf of the main growth stage 1 of leaf development (main shoot) until harvest in garlic cv. Morado INTA and cv. Nieve INTA. Gravimetric humidity (Hg), temperature and bulk soil electrical conductivity were measured. Leaf number, plant height and pseudostem, bulb diameter and bulb weight were measured. Results and Conclusions: From planting garlic until July, average values between 12 % Hg to 20 % Hg, between 30.2 ºC to 14.4 ºC of soil temperature and between 0.314mS.cm-1 to 0.090mS.cm-1 of bulk electrical conductivity were recorded. During water restriction, soil moisture and salinity decreased and soil temperature gradually increased. Deficit irrigation at 50 % ETc reduced bulb diameter and bulb weight. The application of deficit irrigation with 75 % ETc did not affect bulb diameter nor bulb weight. Garlic cv. Morado INTA exhibited higher leaf number and bulb weight. The application of controlled deficit irrigation, from the 7th-10th visible leaf of the main growth stage 1 of leaf development (main shoot) until harvest (01/08 to 24/11) in a western region of the province of La Rioja, differentially affects vegetative growth and bulb production, depending on the level of water restriction and garlic cultivar.

La horticultura en regiones áridas y semiáridas, tal como sucede en parte de La Rioja, tiene diversos condicionantes, entre ellos la escasez de agua, alta evaporación y los vientos cálidos y secos. Se caracterizaron la humedad, temperatura y salinidad del suelo y se evaluaron el crecimiento vegetativo y la producción de bulbos en dos cultivares de ajo mediante la aplicación del riego deficitario controlado (desde la etapa de crecimiento del brote principal hasta cosecha) en el oeste de La Rioja. Se realizó en el INTA EEA Chilecito. Se utilizó el diseño factorial de tratamientos al azar con cuatro repeticiones. Se aplicaron un riego completo (RC-100 % de la ETc) durante el ciclo de cultivo y dos niveles con riego deficitario controlado (RDC-75 % de la ETc y RDC-50 % de la ETc) desde la 7ma-10ma hoja visible de la etapa de crecimiento principal 1 de desarrollo de hoja (brote principal) hasta cosecha en ajos cv. Morado INTA y cv. Nieve INTA. Se midieron humedad gravimétrica (Hg), temperatura y conductividad eléctrica aparente de suelo. Se midieron número de hojas, altura y pseudotallo de la planta y el diámetro y peso de bulbo. Resultados y conclusiones: desde la plantación de ajos hasta julio se registraron valores promedios entre 12 al 20 % Hg, entre 30,2 a 14,4 ºC de temperatura de suelo y entre 0,314 a 0,090 mS.cm-1 de conductividad eléctrica aparente. Durante la restricción hídrica disminuyeron la humedad y la salinidad del suelo y aumentó gradualmente la temperatura de suelo. La aplicación de riego deficitario con el 50 % de la ETc redujo el diámetro y el peso de bulbo. La aplicación de riego deficitario con el 75 % de la ETc no afectaron el diámetro de bulbo ni el peso de bulbo. Los ajos cv. Morado INTA exhibieron mayor cantidad de hojas y mayor peso de bulbo. La aplicación del riego deficitario controlado, desde la 7ma-10ma hoja visible de la etapa de crecimiento principal 1 de desarrollo de hoja (brote principal) hasta cosecha (01/08 al 24/11) en una región oeste de la provincia de La Rioja, afecta diferencialmente el crecimiento vegetativo y la producción de bulbos, según el nivel de restricción hídrica y cultivar de ajo.
