description Pascalia glauca is one of the most important poisonous plants in Argentina. Although goats are known to be sus ceptible to P. glauca poisoning, reports about this species are scarce. This work aimed to characterize the exper imental intoxication in goats with P. glauca. 12 adult Saanen goats were divided into 4 groups based on the amount of the plant given. Groups 1 to 3 ingested 4g/kg, 6g/kg and 8g/kg of dry plant respectively. The fourth group was the control group and it was offered alfalfa hay only. The poisoned animals were inspected every two hours and blood samples were collected 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours after poisoning to measure the level of liver enzymes. Clinically, groups 2 and 3 showed anorexia, depression, recumbency, myoclonus, seizures and death between 9 and 24 hours after poisoning. Pathologic findings included centrilobular necrosis with and without hemorrhages. Both groups showed elevated serum aspartate aminotransferase activity between 6 and 24 hours after P. glauca ingestion. The control group and group 1 did not show clinical signs or hepatic enzyme elevation despite being controlled for 15 days after the poisoning. This work allowed us to collect further information about the clinical and pathological aspects of P. glauca poisoning in goats.

Pascalia glauca es una de las plantas tóxicas más importantes de Argentina. A pesar de que se sabe que las cabras son susceptibles a la intoxicación por P. glauca, los informes sobre esta especie son escasos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue caracterizar la intoxicación experimental en cabras con P. glauca. Se dividieron 12 cabras adultas de raza Saanen en 4 grupos en función de la cantidad de planta administrada. Los grupos 1 a 3 ingirieron 4 g/kg, 6 g/kg y 8 g/kg de planta seca respectivamente. El cuarto grupo fue el grupo control y se le ofreció solo heno de alfalfa. Los animales intoxicados fueron inspeccionados cada dos horas y se les tomaron muestras de sangre 6, 12, 24 y 48 horas después de la intoxicación para medir los niveles de enzimas hepáticas. Clínicamente, los grupos 2 y 3 mostraron anorexia, depresión, decúbito, mioclonía, convulsiones y muerte entre 9 y 24 horas después de la intoxicación. Los hallazgos patológicos incluyeron necrosis centrolobulillar con y sin hemorragias. Ambos grupos mostraron una actividad eleva da de la aspartato aminotransferasa sérica entre 6 y 24 horas después de la ingestión de P. glauca. El grupo control y el grupo 1 no mostraron signos clínicos ni elevación de enzimas hepáticas a pesar de que fueron controlados durante 15 días después de la intoxicación. Este trabajo permitió obtener más información sobre los aspectos clínicos y patológicos de la intoxicación por P. glauca en cabras.
