Data was collected through interviews carried out with community leaders, members of farmers' associations, and farmers, among others. Preliminary results indicate that 68 percent of the farmers own the land, 4 percent are tenants, and 26 percent are in process of legalizing their situation. Cassava is the main crop, followed by yam; of the total cassava production, 58 percent is transformed into table flour and 42 percent is consumed fresh. Starch production is low, reaching only 0.5 percent of total root production. Products are traded in the open market as well as through middlemen. Wholesaling is uncommon. (CIAT)

(CIAT) Se describe la metodologia, basada en el principio investigacion-accion, utilizada para comprender la realidad social de cultivadores de yuca en pequena escala en Guapira (Bahia, Brasil). Los objetivos especificos fueron identificar los principales problemas de la comunidad en estudio, los factores de produccion disponibles y los problemas de investigacion asi como seleccionar las tecnologias apropiadas. Los datos se recolectaron mediante entrevistas realizadas con lideres comunitarios, agricultores y miembros de las asociaciones de agricultores, entre otros. Los resultados preliminares indican que 68 por ciento de los agricultores poseen la tierra, 4 por ciento son arrendatarios y 26 por ciento estan en proceso de legalizacion de su situacion. La yuca es el cultivo principal, seguido por name; de la produccion total de yuca, 58 por ciento se transforma en harina de mesa y 42 por ciento se consume fresco. La produccion de almidon es baja, alcanzando solo 0.5 por ciento de la produccion total de raices. Los productos se comercian en el mercado abierto como tambien a traves de intermediarios.
