| description | Background information is given on the Paraguayan cassava project, which aims at increasing cassava production and productivity through the use of improved technology while improving the living standards of cassava growers in Caaguazu and Paraguari. Different information retrieval procedures were used to collect basic information on existing production systems; these included a survey which helped identify main production constraints and a physical characterization of production zones; a production questionnaire replied by 100 farmers in each region, which yielded valuable information on land availability, soil impoverishment, planting times, labor, and traditional cultural practices; and a cassava starch production study which consisted in 20 interviews, 10 in each region, which helped identify processing problems, technologies and equipment used. The latter study indicated the existence of 3 levels of production, namely completely rudimentary, semimechanized, and mechanized. A marketing survey was also carried out at the wholesaler, retailer, and consumer levels. Information was collected on commercialization channels, percentage distribution among participants, vol. and price paid/received, margins for middlemen, product characteristics considered important to retailers and consumers, sites of purchase according to income strata, and economic losses due to deterioration. (CIAT) Se dan los antecedentes del proyecto de yuca en Paraguay, el cual esta orientado hacia el aumento de la produccion y productividad de la yuca mediante el uso de tecnologia mejorada, al mismo tiempo que mejora las condiciones de vida de los cultivadores de yuca en Caaguazu y Paraguari. Se usaron diferentes procedimientos de recuperacion de informacion para recolectar informacion basica sobre los sistemas existentes de produccion; estos incluyeron una encuesta que ayudo a identificar las principales limitaciones de produccion y una caracterizacion fisica de zonas productoras; un cuestionario de produccion contestado por 100 agricultores en cada region, el cual dio informacion valiosa sobre disponibilidad de tierra, agotamiento del suelo, epocas de siembra, mano de obra y practicas culturales tradicionales; y un estudio de produccion de almidon de yuca que consistio en 20 entrevistas, 10 en cada region, y que ayudo a identificar problemas de procesamiento, tecnologias y equipo utilizados. El ultimo estudio indico la existencia de 3 niveles de produccion, a saber completamente rudimentario, semimecanizado y mecanizado. Tambien se llevo a cabo una encuesta de mercadeo a los niveles de mayorista, minorista y consumidor. Se recolecto informacion sobre canales de comercializacion, porcentaje de distribucion entre participantes, vol. y precio pagado/recibido, margenes para intermediarios, caracteristicas del producto consideradas importantes para los minoristas y consumidores, sitios de compra segun estrato de ingreso y perdidas economicas debido a deterioro.
