Venezolana was divided into 2 big lots: one of the lots was immersed in a solution of benomyl (3 g/l), maneb (3 g/l), and malathion (2 cc/l) for 5 min prior to planting. An additional factor was included the 2nd yr: seed origin (CIAT or the farmers). Significant differences were recorded the 1st yr among farmers for most of the variables under study. Treated plots had a higher final stand and a higher yield/ha (commercial plus noncommercial roots). No significant differences were recorded the 2nd yr regarding plant height, final stand, total wt. of aerial parts, and commercial and total root yields between treated and nontreated plots. The total no. of plants and the total wt. of aerial parts at harvest were significantly lower in the plots planted to farmers' seed compared with plots planted to CIAT seed; no significant differences, however, occurred in commercial root yield and total root yield. (CIAT) En fincas de productores de yuca en los departamentos de Cordoba, Sucre, Bolivar y Atlantico (Colombia), se evaluo la practica de tratar la semilla de yuca con productos quimicos. En cada finca, la semilla de yuca var. Venezolana se dividio en 2 grandes lotes: uno de los lotes se sumergio en una solucion con benomil (3 g/l), maneb (3 g/l) y malation (2 cc/l) durante 5 min antes de la siembra. El segundo ano se incluyo un factor adicional: origen de la semilla (CIAT o de los agricultores). El primer ano se registraron diferencias significativas entre agricultores para la mayoria de las variables estudiadas. Las parcelas con tratamiento quimico presentaron mayor no. de plantas cosechadas y mayor rendimiento/ha (raices comerciales mas no comerciales). El segundo ano no se presentaron diferencias significativas en cuanto a altura de la planta, poblacion en el momento de la cosecha, peso total de la parte aerea y rendimiento de raices comerciales y totales entre parcelas tratadas y sin tratar. El no. total de plantas y el peso total de la parte aerea en el momento de la cosecha fueron significativamente menores en las parcelas sembradas con semilla del agricultor en comparacion con las parcelas sembradas con semilla CIAT, pero no se produjeron diferencias significativas en el rendimiento de raices comerciales y de raices totales.
