The world rice supply is now capable of satisfying the demand for this staple without having to increase, in general, the area planted to the crop. During the time period covered by the study, no significant changes were observed in global rice production structure. The quarterly averages of the years 1979-1981 and 1999-2001 were initially compared, and then more recent figures, corresponding to the 2007-2008 growth cycle, were reviewed. Asia continues to be the world’s grain production hub, accounting for nearly 90% of total production worldwide, in other words, more than 600 million tons of paddy rice per year. Although rice is still basically a noncommercial crop at the international level—only 7% of total production is exported—relatively significant changes have occurred in international rice trade figures. Asia has been consolidated as a rice exporter, accounting for 50% of world exports. It is also the region that imports the most rice, accounting for 75% of global imports. These data imply that a high percentage of international rice trade is intra-continental. Net trade figures (imports–exports) confirm this assertion. Africa, in turn, is the only continent that presents a positive financial balance in terms of rice imports. The analysis of recent figures (2007-2008) shows that the economic scenario for rice production will be mainly influenced by exogenous variables such as the increase in the cost of oil, national food security policies, and the aggravation of climate changes, which have triggered an emerging food crisis. |

Se analizan las tendencias de la producción mundial de arroz, incluyendo las principales variables como área, producción, rendimiento, comercio y precio internacional. Según las estadísticas mundiales, la productividad, medida en toneladas de arroz ‘paddy’ por hectárea, se ha incrementado en los últimos 28 años. Este resultado del mejoramiento tecnológico ha permitido que haya un abastecimiento mundial de arroz capaz de satisfacer la demanda sin necesidad de aumentar, en general, el área sembrada. La estructura de la producción mundial de arroz no presentó, en general, modificaciones significativas en los períodos analizados. En primer lugar se comparan los promedios trimestrales de los años 1979-1981 y 1999-2001, y en segundo lugar se revisan las cifras más recientes del ciclo 2007-2008. Asia sigue concentrando la mayor producción de este cereal: produce cerca del 90% del total mundial, es decir, más de 600 millones de toneladas de arroz ‘paddy’ (arroz cáscara) por año. Aunque el arroz es todavía un cultivo poco comercializado a nivel internacional —sólo se exporta el 7% de la producción total— se observan cambios relativamente significativos en las cifras del comercio internacional del arroz. Asia se ha consolidado como región exportadora, dando origen al 50% de las exportaciones mundiales de arroz. Asia es también el mayor importador de arroz con el 75% de las importaciones globales. Estos datos implican que un alto porcentaje del comercio internacional del arroz es intra-continental. Las cifras de comercio neto (importaciones–exportaciones) confirman esta afirmación. África, por su parte, es el único continente que presenta un balance positivo en las importaciones de arroz.
