(CIAT) En 1986 el proyecto en Peru se concentro en 3 actividades principales: mejoramiento genetico, produccion de semilla y capacitacion cientifica. Los avances mas significativos en la region costera consistieron en la introduccion de 35 lineas avanzadas de frijol tipo Canario, resistentes a BCMV. Estas lineas tambien se evaluaron en ensayos en finca para determinar cuales se liberarian oficialmente. Se fomento la produccion de semilla basica de frijol en Lambayeque, Arequipa, Cajamarca y Valle de Chincha, y se sembraron mas de 150 ha. Seis cientificos del Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones y Promocion Agraria que trabajan en frijol, participaron en los cursos de capacitacion ofrecidos por CIAT, y otros cientificos tomaron cursos en Peru.
