(CIAT) Se ha dado enfasis fundamental a la busqueda de genotipos con arquitectura erecta, adaptados a espacios estrechos entre hileras y altas poblaciones y que muestren incrementos notables en rendimiento bajo manejo agronomico intensivo. Esta estrategia de investigacion se complementa con estudios sobre problemas especificos tales como explotacion de la madurez tardia; efectos del tamano de la semilla en el tamano celular de los tejidos, tolerancia a la sequia y tasas fotosinteticas foliares; y posibles ineficiencias en polinizacion.
