(CIAT) Se seleccionaron 5 localidades representativas de las principales zonas de Costa Rica y se efectuo un muestreo aleatorio de 44 fincas para conocer por que predomina el sistema de siembra de frijol tapado entre los agricultores y sus principales caracteristicas agronomicas. Los agricultores que utilizaron este sistema se basaron en caracteristicas como bajo costo de produccion, menor riesgo de capital invertido, labor tradicional que permite obtener el frijol que van a consumir durante un ano y vender el excedente, menor requerimiento de mano de obra, y la utilizacion de terrenos con excesiva pendiente. El 28 por ciento de los agricultores involucrados en el estudio tuvo perdidas por la siembra del frijol bajo este sistema, 9 por ciento obtuvo utilidades que oscilaron entre 40 y 80 por ciento y 62 por ciento tuvo utilidades que oscilaron entre 100 y 502 por ciento.
