description The most important steps in the introduction and selection of bean genetic material are described. The 1st step involves the identification of the existing sources of germplasm (germplasm banks, national and international nurseries, lines obtained through hybridization, and local materials) and the selection and introduction of those materials that fulfill the breeding objectives and that, in general terms, respond to marketing conditions and farmers' demands. The 2nd step involves the establishment of discriminatory trials to discard deficient materials and to select the best. These trials can be of 4 types: observation or preliminary trials, yield trials, adaptation or regional trials, and on-farm trials. During the last step promising lines are multiplied and registered. (CIAT) Se describen las etapas mas importantes de la introduccion y seleccion de material genetico de frijol. La primera etapa consiste en la identificacion de las fuentes de germoplasma existentes (bancos de germoplasma, viveros nacionales e internacionales, lineas obtenidas por hibridacion y materiales criollos) y la seleccion e introduccion de los materiales que se ajusten a los objetivos de mejoramiento y que, en terminos generales, respondan a las condiciones de mercadeo y las exigencias del agricultor. La segunda etapa involucra el establecimiento de ensayos discriminatorios para descartar los materiales deficientes y escoger los mejores. Estos ensayos pueden ser de 4 tipos: ensayos de observacion o preliminares, ensayos de rendimiento, ensayos de adaptacion o regionales y ensayos en fincas. En la ultima etapa se procede a incrementar y a registrar las lineas promisorias.
