(CIAT) En 1985, la investigacion en economia en CIAT se enfoco hacia los estudios de produccion y mercadeo y hacia la capacitacion. Los estudios de produccion identificaron limitaciones a nivel de finca y evaluaron nuevas tecnologias como solucion a estas limitaciones ademas de su adopcion. Las preferencias del consumidor, la estructura del mercado y la demanda se consideraron factores criticos puesto que la mayor parte del frijol en America Latina llega al consumidor a traves del mercado. La mayor parte de la investigacion sobre estos temas fue realizada en colaboracion con los programas nacionales, y un objetivo importante fue el fortalecimiento de su capacidad de investigacion por medio de la capacitacion y proyectos conjuntos.
