description Since product development according to consumer-defined specifications constitutes a key to success for integrated cassava products, the process for generating and selecting concepts for new products and turning them into successful commodities are described. New products also cover traditional cassava products which are improved through better quality and/or more efficient processing. Similarities and differences are pointed out between product development for the commercial food industry and the development of cassava-based products through integrated cassava projects. Steps for defining the development of new cassava products are idea generation, idea screening, concept testing, feasibility study, product and process development and testing, market plan, test plan, commercial launch and expansion, and evaluation. Categories for evaluating new product market potential are marketability, life span of the product in the market place, productive ability, and growth potential. A strong research input is needed for product development in cassava, at all stages. Macroeconomic research is needed to screen ideas and for feasibility studies, while marketing research is obviously important in the areas of concept development and test marketing. Both types of research, in addition to technical research, are important in the product development and testing phase, where the process is refined at the pilot plant, real costs are obtained, and the product is available for consumer testing. (CIAT) Puesto que el desarrollo de productos segun especificaciones definidas por el consumidor constituye una clave para el exito de los proyectos integrados de yuca, se describe el proceso seguido para generar y seleccionar conceptos para productos nuevos y transformarlos en productos basicos exitosos. Los productos nuevos tambien incluyen productos tradicionales de yuca que son mejorados a traves de un procesamiento mas eficiente y/o mejor calidad. Se senalan las semejanzas y las diferencias entre el desarrollo de productos para la industria alimentaria comercial y el desarrollo de productos derivados de la yuca mediante los proyectos integrados de yuca. Los principales pasos en el desarrollo de nuevos productos de yuca son generacion de ideas, examen selectivo de ideas, prueba de conceptos, estudio de factibilidad, desarrollo y prueba del producto y de los procesos, plan de mercado, mercado de prueba, lanzamiento comercial y ampliacion, evaluacion. Las categorias para evaluar el potencial de mercado del nuevo producto son facilidad de mercadeo, duracion del producto en el mercado, capacidad productiva y potencial de crecimiento. Se necesita un fuerte esfuerzo de investigacion para desarrollar productos de yuca, en todas las etapas. Se necesitan investigaciones macroeconomicas para examinar ideas y para realizar estudios de factibilidad, en tanto que la investigacion de mercadeo es importante en las areas de desarrollo de conceptos y de mercadeo de prueba. Los 2 tipos de investigacion, ademas de la investigacion tecnica, son importantes para la fase de desarrollo de productos y de prueba, donde el proceso se refina en la planta piloto, se obtienen los costos reales y el producto esta disponible para ser probado por los consumidores.
