(CIAT) Se revisan diferentes caracteristicas fisiologicas de la planta de yuca que se pueden utilizar como parametros de seleccion: IAF, IC, produccion de biomasa, plantas con hojas amfistomatosas y fotosintesis C4. Se enfatiza que se debe tratar de seleccionar var. que presenten menor disminucion en condiciones exptl. de estres, puestos que estas tenderan a presentar una respuesta de rendimiento mas estable en condiciones reales de estres. Se discuten brevemente 2 posibilidades para aumentar aun mas el potencial de rendimiento de la yuca: 1) lograr que la planta mantenga la produccion total de biomasa y que al mismo tiempo use menor cantidad de hidratos de carbono en la produccion de hojas y tallos; 2) combinar una mayor produccion de biomasa con un alto IC.
