| description | The importance of estimating genetic parameters in cassava in order to produce superior performing cv. is highlighted. Different concepts related to phenotypic variance are discussed; variance is divided into genetic (additive, dominance, epistasis) and environmental. Of the former, additive variance is most important in plant breeding. The statistical models developed to estimate genetic variance are indicated. Other concepts discussed are heritability and its estimation (based on regression or on components of variance) and correlated factors. Finally, the results of different studies carried out to estimate the components of variance in cassava or the heritability in the crop are reviewed, as well as correlated characters. It is concluded that further studies are needed to elucidate which types of gene action are involved in the expression of major agronomic characters. In future expt., care should be taken to assure that sampling is adequate for environmental conditions and that plant competition is representative of commercial production. It is evident that some characters depend more on nonadditive genetic effects than others; dominance and epistatic effects are important in the expression of root yield and yield components. (CIAT) |

(CIAT) Se destaca la importancia de la estimacion de los parametros geneticos en la yuca para producir cv. superiores. Se discuten diferentes conceptos relacionados con la varianza fenotipica, la cual se divide en genetica (genetica aditiva, dominancia, epistasis) y ambiental; de las anteriores, la varianza aditiva es la mas importante para los fitomejoradores. Se indican los diferentes modelos estadisticos desarrollados para calcular la varianza genetica. Otros conceptos discutidos son la heredabilidad y su estimacion (basada en la regresion o en los componentes de la varianza) y factores correlacionados. Luego se revisan los resultados de diferentes estudios realizados para estimar los componentes de la varianza en yuca o la heredabilidad obtenida en el cultivo, ademas de caracteres correlacionados. Se concluye que es necesario realizar estudios adicionales para elucidar cuales son los tipos de accion genica involucrados en la expresion de los caracteres agronomicos mas importantes. En expt. futuros se debe asegura que la toma de muestras sea apropiada para el ambiente y que la competencia entre plantas sea representativa de la produccion comercial. Es evidente que algunos caracteres dependen mas de los efectos geneticos no aditivos que otros; la dominancia y los efectos epistaticos tienen alguna importancia en la expresion del rendimiento de la raiz y sus componentes.
